Mongolia observes Nauryz
Happy Nauryz to our Thiess teammates who are celebrating Nauryz!
Nauryz marks the first day of spring for the Kazakh community and is celebrated annually by more than 300 million people around the globe.
Nauryz means a ‘new day’ and usually falls on Vernal Equinox where day and night are of equal length. This year it is being observed over several days between the 19 - 22 March.
Mongolia’s ethnic Kazakhs celebrate Nauryz by dressing in traditional clothes, gathering with their family members and relatives and enjoy traditional food. The celebration is also accompanied by traditional concert, cultural shows and events.
Ethnic Kazakhs arrived in Mongolia in the early 20th century in the country’s westernmost part and make up five percent of the total population.
Mongolia’s cultural diversity and unity is strongly enriched by the beautiful art and traditions of the Kazakh people, including hunting with eagles, rich and stunning embroidery, and cuisine.
