Thiess celebrates the start of Stobie Open Pit Mining Project

On October 9, we proudly hosted the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Sudbury community leaders and key stakeholders at the Vale Stobie Open Pit Mine site to celebrate the revitalization of operations, emphasizing sustainable practices and partnerships with Indigenous communities.

The event began with an acknowledgment of the traditional territories of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nation.

Minister Wilkinson’s visit coincided with recent announcements regarding critical minerals infrastructure funding to support projects in the Sudbury region. With up to $8.4 million in conditionally approved funding through the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund, these investments will enhance the region’s capacity to produce essential minerals, including nickel and copper, vital for the clean energy transition.

Minister Wilkinson said, “Today’s investments are about fostering Northern Ontario’s long history and mining expertise to create more jobs and drive economic growth now and into the future. The revitalization of the Stobie Pit will be a major step in advancing critical minerals – specifically the nickel and copper – needed to support Canada’s growing clean economy and stance as a reliable supplier of choice for the world, and Thiess will play a big part in that work.”

Thiess Group Executive – Americas Darrell White said: “We are excited to embark on this new chapter at the Stobie Open Pit Mine, which represents our commitment to sustainable mining and community partnerships. Together with our Indigenous partners, we aim to create meaningful economic opportunities to benefit all stakeholders as we work together to extract the critical minerals needed for a low carbon future.”

Craig Nootchtai, Gimaa (Chief), Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, said: “With our traditional territories spanning one of Canada’s key mining basins, we must take an active role in local mining activities. By owning and renting these drills, our communities will reap significant benefits, both economically and through the creation of meaningful employment opportunities.”

As we move forward with the Stobie Open Pit Mining Project, we remain dedicated to building strong relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders, ensuring that every step contributes to a sustainable and inclusive future.
