Thiess strengthens Indigenous leadership through First Nations board experience program
Thiess recently participated in The Committee for Brisbane’s First Nations Board Experience Program, an initiative designed to amplify Indigenous voices in corporate leadership. This program, launched in 2023 in partnership with Aurecon, empowers Indigenous leaders by offering board-level experience through active participation in committee meetings and engagement with seasoned directors.
Among the participants was Alex Dyball, a Kalkadoon man and Thiess Asset Services & Decarbonisation Engineer. As part of the program, Alex contributed his insights on Indigenous representation and deepened his knowledge of corporate governance. Reflecting on the experience, Alex said, “Participating is not only about personal development; it’s about reshaping the corporate landscape by embedding Indigenous perspectives. This program has given me a greater understanding of how corporate committees operate and how we can create pathways for future Indigenous leaders to represent and be heard at the Board table.”
Alex’s commitment to advancing Indigenous representation extends beyond this program. He is an active member of the Australian Network of Mining Engineering Educators (ANMEE) Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Reference Sub-committee, which champions the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge in mining engineering curricula. Recently, Alex was also invited to join the Queensland Resources Council’s Indigenous Affairs Committee—an opportunity that followed his recognition as an Indigenous Rising Star in 2023.
